Text Messages Aren’t Enough

Text Messages Aren’t Enough

We have lost the personable touch and I blame the phone. This summer I wanted to thank my neighbors for helping me out in so many selfless ways. I thought a text message doesn’t hold much weight and they didn’t want me to pay them for their help, so I needed something in between. I ordered custom stationary with my initials and pink stripes, bought clear mini goodie bags, and found my favorite homemade lemon sugar cookie recipe.

Writing out the thank you cards took the longest. Thinking of different memories, moments, and gratitudes took some time, but that is the whole point. I think we need to bring back the humane element to our society. Why are we trying to make everything faster, more efficient, and less personable? When the cards were done, I made the cookie dough and left it in the fridge overnight. The following morning, I rolled them out, and used my longhorn cookie cutter! Yes, I spent money on that at a University of Texas merch store. The horns added complication but it was worth it in the end. Once I finished baking, it was time to assemble. I added 4 cookies for each neighbor and hole punched each card to attach to the goodie bags. All of my neighbors thought it was the sweetest thing and they told me it made their day. Their reaction felt amazing to me and I think this entire interaction solidified the kind of person I want to be.
